Spa Therapy Vegan Deodorant in Summertime

il_fullxfull.82390238.jpg

Earlier this summer I embarked on a journey to find the perfect natural deodorant. I tried Lush’s Aromarant first, which was ok but I stilled felt I could do better.

Enter Spa Therapy’s Vegan Deodorant in Summertime!

I’ve  been wearing this deodorant for a week and I love it. The scent is fresh with slight floral hints. Not too over powering but definitely strong enough to hide any sweaty pit odor. It doesn’t interfere with the sweating process but rather neutralizes odor causing bacteria. One of my issues with Lush’s deodorant was its rough application. Spa Therapy’s deodorant  goes on silky smooth and clear so you don’t have to worry about those unsightly white marks on dark clothing (don’t you hate those?!)

The deodorant is also vegan. Here’s a list of ingredients from Spa Therapy’s Etsy shop:

Propylene Glycol: A humectant and fragrance carrier
Purified Water
Sodium Stearate: A stearic acid salt used as a nontoxic stabilizer.
Vegetable Protein: Neutralizes odor causing enzymes. Protects against chapping and irritation
Hydrogenated Castor Oil: An emollient and carrier oil
Isosteareth-2: A fatty-acid that works as an emulsifying agent
Salicylic Acid: antiseptic agent derived from the willow tree. Prevents pores from clogging up
Steareth-100: An emulsifier, to help keep t ingredients mixed.
Chamomile Flower Extract: An anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antiseptic and soothing herb
Aloe Vera Leaf Juice: A healing emollient with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties
Grapefruit Seed Extract: An antioxidant that neutralizes free radicals. Used as preservative
Diazolidinyl Urea & Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate: Preservatives with broad fungicidal activity – non paraben preservative
EDTA: An amino acid that improves product stability
Fragrance
Free of aluminum or bactericides.

I am very pleased with Spa Therapy’s Vegan Deodorant. I’m loving the Summertime scent but there are plenty of scents to choose from.

I will continue my quest though. I’ll let you know what else I find!

Oil Cleansing Method

I recently received an excellent question about the Oil Cleansing Method (OCM):

I was wondering if you have tried the oil cleansing method for your skin?  I saw some videos on youtube about it but because my skin is prone to breakouts I am a little afraid to try it.

Yes. You can absolutely use the Oil Cleansing Method on acne prone skin. I found a lot of great info about OCM at Prissy Green. The common misconception is that oil causes acne. Oil alone does not cause acne – other factors like age, hormones and prolonged clogging of the pores of trapped bacteria, dead skin cells and dirt are the actual contributors to acne. The natural oils your skin produce are there to protect and heal your skin. Most oils are actually good for your skin.

Most people use castor oil or extra virgin olive oil as a base for their oil solution. Castor oil is great at drawing out the dirt and bacteria trapped in your pores, while healing your skin. Extra virgin olive oil is great for normal and dry skin types but not ideal for oily/acne prone skin types because it is a heavier oil. Other effective oils to use are Grapeseed Oil – which is light and known for its astringent properties,  Jojoba oil – a great moisturizer, Avocado oil, Apricot oil, Hazelnut oil, and Evening Primrose oil – which are all known for their non-comedic properties.

Of course you would need to experiment and find which blends work best for you. Here’s some sample ratios to start out with:

Normal Skin – 50% Extra Virgin Olive Oil & 50% Castor Oil

Dry Skin – 75% Extra Virgin Olive Oil & 25% Castor Oil

Oily/Acne Prone Skin – 60% Castor Oil,  20% Jojoba Oil & 20% Grapeseed Oil

Sensitive Skin – 60% Castor Oil, 20% Jojoba Oil &  20% Apricot Kernal Oil

  • Now that you have your oil blend together, here’s what you do:

  1. Gently massage your oil blend onto your face. Massage for about a minute if you have a clean face and for 30 seconds if you are wearing makeup.
  2. Take a warm washcloth and drape it over your face. The steam will open up your pores and allow the oils to draw out the dirt and bacteria.
  3. Wipe the oils off with the washcloth, massage some oil into your skin again and repeat. You can repeat this step as many times as you like.
  4. When you’ve finished steaming gently start wiping the oil away.
  5. Once you’ve wiped all of the excess oil from your face, rinse with cool water and pat dry.

You can find these oils at Whole Foods or any natural food store or you can buy them in bulk online at From Nature With Love. Here are two links to more great information about the Oil Cleansing Method:

So what do you think? Have you tried this method before? Is it something you think you may try in the future?

Soleo Sunscreen

soleo

Happy Memorial Day! I know I’ve been on a natural sunscreen kick lately but here is one more! Soleo Sunscreen has been declared the #1 sunscreen by Skin Deep. Soleo claimed its number 1 spot because of it’s safety and effectiveness without the use of harsh chemicals used in traditional sunscreens. Soleo contains Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide which are recognized  as being the most effective and safe sunscreens due to their stability in formulations, the fact that they repel both types of radiation, and they don’t allow harmful rays to be absorbed – they reflect the suns rays before they can do any damage. Check out the Skin Deep Database to look at the rest of the sunscreens on the list.

I hope everyone is having a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend. And remember to take a moment in between the barbeques and beach visits to think about the troops out there who make the ultimate sacrifice every day so that we can live happy and care-free lives.

And wear your sunscreen!! 😉

Burt’s Bees Chemical-Free Sunscreen

burts_bees

We all know by now that we are supposed to wear sunscreen everyday if we want to preserve our healthy, youthful skin and avoid sun damage. But lately I’ve been hearing all kinds of terrible things about the chemicals that are in sunscreens and how they too can be harmful to our skin. So what are we supposed to do?

Thank goodness for Burt’s Bees, who have their Burt’s Bees Chemical-Free Sunscreen. This sunscreen’s primary ingredient is titanium dioxide, a natural mineral that blocks the sun as soon as you put it on, unlike most sunscreens that need at least 30 minutes to activate. And there is no sign of ingredients like benzophenone, octinoxate, octylmethoxycinnamate, and oxybenzone which can be harmful to our health. Burt’s Bees Chemical-Free Sunscreen has a fresh scent and is light enough to wear on your face. The light-weight, non-greasy formula won’t clog pores and won’t cause breakouts.

Burt’s Bees is one of my favorite companies so I’m not surprised that they’ve made another great, healthy product.

Best Tinted Moisturizers

So you all know by now that I love summer. There’s something about the sun’s warm rays that just makes me completely and utterly happy. I wrote about the importance of sunscreen for your face last summer but wanted to revisit that topic. Specifically, I wanted to share my favorite tinted moisturizers with SPF.

Tinted moisturizers are perfect for the summer. They give you light coverage without you having to put on a full face of makeup. Here are some that I’m particularly fond of:

Laura Mercier – Tinted Moisturizer Oil-Free with SPF 20

If you’ve done any googling on tinted moisturizers this one has undoubtedly come up. It definitely my favorite. It super light-weight and non-greasy and leaves your skin looking flawless. The oil-free version is very good for those of us who have  oily or acne prone skin (me!) but there is also one available for normal skin types. A definite must try!

Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer - Oil-Free

Korres – Watermelon Lightweight Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 30

Here’s another oil-free one. This moisturizer is also billed as natural but after taking a look at the ingredients I’m not too sure. Either way it offers light-weight, non-oily coverage and smells yummy! Plus with SPF 30, you’re pretty protected from the sun’s harmful rays. The one downside is that it only comes in 3 shades so if you’re very pale or very dark you will probably not be too pleased.

Jane Iredale – Dream Tint with SPF 15

A perfect moisturizer if you’re looking to go a more natural route. Jane Iredale is famous for making phenomenal mineral makeup and her tinted moisturizer is no different. This super absorbent product also prevent water loss and improves the skin’s elasticity. Titanium Dioxide, a more natural sunscreen,  is the main ingredient and the moisturizer is packed with lots of great ingredients like green algae extract, jojoba oil and shea butter. And of course everything is paraben and phthalate free. Comes in 5 shades.

Dream Tint

Kiehl’s – Ultra Facial Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15

This one gives your skin a nice healthy looking finish. They also use some great ingredients for some extra benefits like apricot kernal oil and royal jelly extract. Very moisturizing and easily absorbed.

So these are my fave tinted moisturizers. What about you? Have you tried any of these? What did you think?
